How Efficient is Your Organisation?

Written by Martin Wombwell | 13 July 2017

While a new ERP system or system upgrade will achieve efficiencies and eliminate bugbears, it should be possible to make what you have now work better.

A fresh perspective or sounding board, from a colleague or perhaps a business performance consultant at IT Lab, often identifies and unlocks significant improvements.

Picture the scene. You’re stationary in your car on the commute. Motorcyclists are using you and neighbouring vehicles for slalom practice, threatening to scratch your pride and joy with every sway. While they may arrive at their destination before you by showing off their skills, they are still performing the same laborious and repetitive trek.

Most of us can’t avoid this frustration and must simply tolerate it. However, we can review laborious and repetitive activities once we arrive at the office. The desire for efficiency and effectiveness should be on everyone’s radar. Why not ask yourself:

  • What processes do you think are repetitive;
  • Do you believe any of them could be less complex;
  • Are you aware of any duplication of effort;
  • How long do these processes take to complete;
  • Could any manual processes be automated;
  • Who asks for information, how often and what notice period is provided;
  • Are any tasks done just because they always have been;
  • What value is obtained from each task;
  • Does the task still have relevance;
  • Who owns and preserves these processes

Encourage your colleagues to perform a similar exercise and you will be surprised at the common themes emerging. Efficiencies can often be achieved by simply reviewing your underlying business processes and moulding them to ensure:

  • They are fit for purpose;
  • Fit the supporting systems;
  • Fit the way you work today

Why not start today and let your thoughts be the catalyst for change. And, if you’d like some help or just a listening ear, give us a call today.
